Letter, [1609 Aug.] to Sermo Principe [i.e. Leonardo Donato, Doge of Venice].

Concerns the presentation of a telescope to the Doge as an instrument for the early sighting of enemy forces approaching by sea or land. Below the letter are Galileo's observations of satellites around Jupiter as discovered by him January 7-15 [1610] with diagrams thought to show his earliest consideration of their orbiting around Jupiter in accordance with Copernican theory (Cf. S. Drake's Galileo at work).
